In my capacity as the owner of an import car dealership, I am often amazed at the levels some wholesalers will go to in order to cover up damages to vehicles. As any reputable reseller will tell you, finding the best vehicles is not only a matter of knowing what to physically look for, it's also a matter of knowing how to spot title and ownership oddities. Lately, I have noticed many wholesalers in possession of autos that were originally sold in the Louisiana and Mississippi areas. For some reason, these vehicles had their titles transferred to wholesalers from states far away. While this isn't completely uncommon, it does raise a red flag when you consider the recent natural disasters that have occurred on the Gulf Coast.  Dealerships need to be aware of the opportunity for unscrupulous parties to effectively "launder" the titles of these vehicles. As a result of Hurricane Katrina, many vehicles were likely paid for via insurance claims against flood damage. These vehicles are finding their way back into the market.

While there is nothing inherently wrong with re-selling a designated flood damaged vehicle, there is something entirely wrong with reselling a flood damaged vehicle under the guise of it not having been damaged.  Being in the industry, I have heard both sides of the argument. Many wholesalers will tell you that flood damaged vehicles are often appropriated by insurance companies as "totalled", when in fact they may have never been submerged in water at all. My answer to that is to say that any business which values its customers and strives to maintain integrity and honesty would never sell a product they are unsure of. In other words, I'm not willing to take a chance with my business and reputation at stake, nor am I willing to gamble with someone else's money.

That's exactly what selling a flood damaged automobile is: gambling with your customers money. Flood damaged vehicles can have corroded electrical systems that are primed for failure, unseen rust damage, and a variety of other problems that can surface at a later time.  My advice to dealerships is to use every resource at their disposal to find out the history of the cars they are purchasing and avoid flood damaged vehicles, unless you plan to sell them as such.

The Masterclass starts with the usual roundtable where each participant presents his/her job, give his/her credits and then goes into more details in how to finance a film. To quote moderator Ira Deutchman, there’s only a number of ways to get your film financed. He continues:

One of them would be the rights to the film itself where distributors, or TV companies or video distribution companies would end up exploiting those rights. The other one would be some sort of equity investment, which is the vast majority of what will end up getting financed from films that you’re carrying into the room mainly because to get a film financed with presales, which is what I was describing a moment ago, requires typically that you have either big stars attached to the movie or that you are a filmmaker or have a filmmaker who has a major track record involved with it.

While watching the panel I realized that whatever is the theme of a workshop, you’ll always end up hearing the same advise: Do Your Homework; an advise hiding another one, rarely said out loud, Know The Right People.

Do your homework is a key aspect in filmmaking at all level and means do your research, be knowledgeable, be aware of what is available for you, where and how, know your strengths, your skills, your needs, and work hard.

But it also means do your homework so you know who are the right people to ensure you will get the right help.

And I’m not talking about Networking in the let-me-give-you-my-business-card-between-two-flute-of-champagne way here. (Especially since nobody drinks champagne, let’s be honest for once.) I’m talking about knowing the existence of the people who can give you practical advice and/or who can unlock funds or grants for you.

Why?

Because filmmaking is all about uniqueness. Your movie/project will (hopefully) never be exactly the same than this other movie that did that and won this, so you will never be able to replicate an exact formula and you will always have to find your own way to make it work. This is a big country and there’s many ways to get a movie done but if you don’t know the right people, you can easily get screwed over, especially when it comes to money.

You just need to listen to executive director Pat Kaufman from the New York State Governor’s Office for Motion Picture and Television Development talking about the different types of incentives available depending on the States or Province you pick, to understand that you can get many headaches if you don’t… do your homework and know Pat Kaufman or one of her peers working in another State. Not knowing her doesn’t mean you won’t be able to make it, it just means that you might fall in an easily avoidable trap if you had knew her.

Because making films is not only about telling a story. It’s also about money. (flash news, right.) The money you need to make your movie, the money you hope to make back, the money you lose or win. Whether you like it or not, money and filmmaking are living hand in hand and the best way not to be crashed by money is to do your homework and know who knows about money and who will be willing to give you a good advise instead of letting you crash against a wall.

As professionals, we all realize how important it is to encourage pre-readers and make their introduction to reading as smooth as possible. The best way to do this is to make the pre-reading experience as much fun as possible, yet giving children the opportunity to learn in small, easy segments, information that will help speed them on their way to becoming good readers. Devising and using pre-reading activities in the classroom can be beneficial in producing a love of reading that will last their entire lives.

Here are some pre-reading activities that might work in your classroom:

1) Have each child choose a book and give them time to study it. When they have had time to formulate a story in their minds according to the pictures, instruct each child to "read" their book to the rest of the class. This works best if each day a different child or two takes a turn and the teacher then reads the book afterward. It is fun and interesting to the children to see how close their stories come to the original...or how different they might be.

2) Plant some items around the classroom with names that rhyme, and announce that you will be conducting a rhyming scavenger hunt. Instruct each child to search until they find 2 items with rhyming names. The name of each item may be written on the board as they are found and the class can repeat the rhyming names.

3) Take the class outside with some sidewalk chalk. Ask each child to look around and spot something with a certain beginning letter. Ask them to repeat the beginning sound of each item, then write the first letter on the sidewalk with the chalk. See how many beginning letters and sounds they can come up with.

4) Bring items into the classroom, such as cereal boxes, cookie packages etc. and point to the words on each and ask the class what they think that word is. They will guess many of the words by the type of package it is, and they will feel a sense of pride and accomplishment by getting many of the words correct, yet they will be learning basic sounds and relating the appearance of the word to the object.

5) Have children choose pictures from magazines and talk about what they think is happening in the picture, has just happened, or is about to happen. In this way, pre-readers can learn about the sequnce of events and better enable them, later on, as readers, to understand and follow plots in stories. This will certainly help to make their future reading skills stronger.

6) Label all of the objects around the classroom, including separate areas such as reading area and play area. By viewing the written words for everything found in the classroom environment, they will be learning the words without even realizing it.

7) Have each child bring in a favorite toy or object. The child may then relate the story of how they got the item, where they got it, and who got it for them. Attention may be given to sounding out the name of the item and it might be written out for them to see.

8) Make a chart of colors. Beside each color, write the name of the color and go over this chart with students a few times a week. The children will eventually learn how the written word for each color looks. In time, you can show the class just the name of the color and ask them which color it is. Eventually, they will be able to correctly link the name of the color and the color itself with it.

9) Practice forming letters of the alphabet with different types of materials. Some fun materials to use are rope, yarn, cloth, pasta, twigs, dried beans or stones.

10) Ask each child to stand in front of the class and recite his or her name. Write the name on the board and concentrate on the beginning letters and sounds of both the first name and the last name. This is effective not only as a pre-reading activity, but as a way for the children to get to know each other better.

These are just a few pre-reading activities that you might find useful. There are many suggestions available online for finding other effective pre-reading activities or might prefer to create your own. Time spent using these and similar pre-reading activities in the classroom is certainly time well spent. Having fun with learning the basics of reading is a great way for children to form good reading habits at an early age.
